About writing in Ukrainian

Ukrainian spelling has its own apostrophe rules, its own vocative case, and many words that writers borrow by habit from Russian. The checker above uses LanguageTool’s Ukrainian rules, an actively developed set that covers spelling, agreement, punctuation and common Russianisms.

5 common mistakes in Ukrainian

1. Missing apostrophe

Ukrainian uses an apostrophe after b, p, v, m, f and r before я, ю, є and ї to show a separate sound: м’ясо, п’ять, сім’я.

❌ Я купив мясо.
✅ Я купив м’ясо.

2. Russianisms

Some phrases copy Russian structures. In Ukrainian you брати участь (take part), not приймати участь.

❌ Я буду приймати участь.
✅ Я буду брати участь.

3. Missing comma before що

A subordinate clause after що, який, бо or коли is separated by a comma.

❌ Я знаю що ти правий.
✅ Я знаю, що ти правий.

4. Не with verbs written together

Не is written separately from verbs: не знаю, не можу.

❌ Я незнаю.
✅ Я не знаю.

5. No vocative case

When you address someone directly, Ukrainian uses the vocative case: Андрію, Олено, пане директоре.

❌ Привіт, Андрій!
✅ Привіт, Андрію!

Try it with a sample sentence

Paste this sentence into the checker above to see what it flags, then compare it with the corrected version:

❌ Я незнаю що купити: мясо чи рибу.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ukrainian grammar checker free?

Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no download.

Is my Ukrainian text stored?

SpellMistake does not save it. To check it, your text is sent to the LanguageTool service, as explained in our Privacy Policy.

Does it catch Russianisms?

Yes, for many common ones. LanguageTool’s Ukrainian rules flag words and phrases borrowed from Russian and suggest the standard Ukrainian form.

Which apostrophe should I use?

The checker accepts the straight apostrophe (‘) and the typographic one (’), which are both used in Ukrainian text.

Can I check Russian too?

Yes. The Russian grammar checker uses a separate set of rules for Russian.
