About Greek

Modern Greek uses one accent mark on most words of two or more syllables, and several letter combinations share the same sound, which makes spelling mistakes common.

About writing in Greek

Modern Greek has only one written accent, the tonos, but every word of two or more syllables needs it, and it is easy to forget on a phone. Many vowels and vowel pairs also sound the same (ι, η, υ, ει, οι), which makes spelling hard even for native speakers. The checker above uses LanguageTool’s Greek rules.

5 common mistakes in Greek

1. Missing accent (tonos)

Words with two or more syllables carry a tonos on the stressed vowel. Without it, some words are ambiguous: πότε (when) and ποτέ (never).

❌ Ειναι πολυ ωραιο.
✅ Είναι πολύ ωραίο.

2. Same sound, different letters

ψηλός (tall) and ψιλός (thin, fine) sound the same. Which vowel to write depends on the word, not the sound.

❌ Το παιδί είναι ψιλό.
✅ Το παιδί είναι ψηλό.

3. Final ν in the article

The masculine accusative article is always τον. The feminine την drops the ν only before certain consonants: τη Μαρία.

❌ Είδα τη Νίκο.
✅ Είδα τον Νίκο.

4. Greek question mark

Greek uses the semicolon-shaped mark ; as its question mark.

❌ Τι κάνεις?
✅ Τι κάνεις;

5. Missing diaeresis

When two vowels are pronounced separately, Greek marks it with a diaeresis or places the accent to show it: ρολόι, καΐκι.

❌ Το ρολοι σταμάτησε.
✅ Το ρολόι σταμάτησε.

Paste this sentence, typed without accents, into the checker above to see what it flags:
