About writing in Slovenian
Slovenian is one of the few languages that still has a dual form for two people or things, and it has strict rules for commas and for the preposition s or z. These, together with the letters č, š and ž, cause most written mistakes. The checker above uses LanguageTool’s Slovenian rules.
5 common mistakes in Slovenian
1. Missing comma before da or ki
Slovenian separates subordinate clauses with a comma, before words such as da, ki, ko and kaj.
❌ Mislim da imaš prav.
✅ Mislim, da imaš prav.
2. S or z
Use s before the voiceless consonants p, f, t, s, š, c, č, k and h, and z before everything else: s prijateljem, z mamo.
❌ Pridem z prijateljem.
✅ Pridem s prijateljem.
3. Plural instead of dual
For two people, Slovenian uses the dual: midva greva (we two go), vidva gresta (you two go).
❌ Midva gremo domov.
✅ Midva greva domov.
4. Missing č, š and ž
č, š and ž are separate letters. Writing c, s and z instead changes or breaks the word.
❌ Ne vem, kaj zelis.
✅ Ne vem, kaj želiš.
5. Adjective agreement
Adjectives and participles agree with the gender of the subject: on je rad, ona je rada.
❌ Ona je rad doma.
✅ Ona je rada doma.
Try it with a sample sentence
Paste this sentence into the checker above to see what it flags, then compare it with the corrected version:
❌ Mislim da je ona rad doma.
✅ Mislim, da je ona rada doma.
Frequently asked questions
