About writing in Italian

Italian is mostly written as it sounds, but accents, apostrophes and double consonants still cause most mistakes, even for native speakers. The checker above uses LanguageTool’s Italian rules, which catch confusions like e and è, wrong apostrophes and misspelled double letters.

5 common mistakes in Italian

1. E or è

È with an accent is the verb “is”. E without an accent means “and”.

❌ Lui e italiano.
✅ Lui è italiano.

2. Qual è with an apostrophe

Qual è never takes an apostrophe, because qual is a complete word that can stand on its own.

❌ Qual’è il problema?
✅ Qual è il problema?

3. Un or un’ before a noun

Use un without an apostrophe before masculine nouns (un amico) and un’ only before feminine nouns starting with a vowel (un’amica).

❌ Ho un’amico a Roma.
✅ Ho un amico a Roma.

4. Ce or c’è

C’è means “there is”. Ce is a pronoun, as in ce l’ho (I have it).

❌ Non ce nessuno a casa.
✅ Non c’è nessuno a casa.

5. Single or double consonants

Doubled letters change pronunciation and meaning in Italian, and words such as soprattutto, accelerare and eccezione are often misspelled.

❌ Mi piace sopratutto la pizza.
✅ Mi piace soprattutto la pizza.

Two of the most common Italian errors in one line. Paste it into the checker above:

❌ Qual’è la strada per la stazione? Non ce nessuno qui.
✅ Qual è la strada per la stazione? Non c’è nessuno qui.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Italian grammar checker free?

Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no download.

Is my Italian text stored?

SpellMistake does not save it. To check it, your text is sent to the LanguageTool service, as explained in our Privacy Policy.

Does it check accents such as perché?

Yes. It flags wrong accents, for example perchè instead of perché, and missing ones such as e instead of è.

Does it check grammar or only spelling?

Both. In Grammar mode it also checks agreement, articles, apostrophes and punctuation. Choose Spelling only if you just want typos.

Is there a version of this page in Italian?

Yes. The correttore ortografico page has the same checker with the interface in Italian.
