About writing in Portuguese

Portuguese has two standard varieties, Brazilian and European, with different spellings and some different grammar. Most mistakes in both come from accents, the crase (à), and words that sound alike such as mas and mais. The checker above uses LanguageTool’s Portuguese rules and lets you choose Brazil or Portugal in the language menu.

5 common mistakes in Portuguese

1. Missing crase

The crase (à) joins the preposition a with the article a. Use it before feminine nouns that take an article after verbs like ir: vou à praia, but vou a Lisboa.

❌ Vou a escola amanhã.
✅ Vou à escola amanhã.

2. Mas or mais

Mas means “but”. Mais means “more”. They sound very similar in many accents.

❌ Eu quero ir, mais não posso.
✅ Eu quero ir, mas não posso.

3. A or há with time

For time that has passed, use há (from haver): há dez anos means “ten years ago” or “for ten years”. Use a for the future: daqui a dez anos.

❌ Moro aqui a dez anos.
✅ Moro aqui há dez anos.

4. Missing accents

Accents change meaning and stress: esta (this) and está (is), e (and) and é (is).

❌ Voce esta bem?
✅ Você está bem?

5. Porque or por que

In Brazilian Portuguese, a direct question takes por que (why). Porque (because) answers it. European Portuguese often writes porque in questions too, which the Portugal option accepts.

❌ Porque você não veio?
✅ Por que você não veio?

Try it with a sample sentence

Three classic errors in one sentence: a instead of há, mais instead of mas, and a missing crase. Paste it into the checker above:

❌ Eu moro aqui a cinco anos, mais nunca fui a praia.
✅ Eu moro aqui há cinco anos, mas nunca fui à praia.
