What this spell checker catches

The spell checker compares every word against a large, up-to-date dictionary and ranks suggestions by how close they are to what you typed. That means a typo like “teh” suggests “the” first, and “recieve” suggests “receive”.

  • Typos and missing or doubled letters (adress, tommorrow, occured)
  • Commonly misspelled words (definately, seperate, accomodate)
  • Split and joined words (alot, infact, eachother)
  • Wrong letter order (freind, wierd, beleive)
  • Spelling differences between US and UK English

Spell checker or grammar checker?

A spell checker only looks at individual words. A word can be spelled perfectly and still be wrong, like “I could of gone” or “their going home”. To catch those, switch to the Grammar check tab above or use the main grammar checker, which checks spelling, grammar, punctuation and style together.

Tips for fewer spelling mistakes

  • Read your text out loud. Your ear catches what your eye skips.
  • Watch out for words your phone autocorrects, such as names and brand terms.
  • Learn the words you miss most often. Our grammar guides cover the most common mix-ups.
