About Slovak

Slovak is the official language of Slovakia. Choosing between i and y, and placing commas correctly, are frequent challenges in written Slovak.

About writing in Slovak

Slovak is close to Czech, and many writing errors come from that closeness: Czech word forms and endings creep into Slovak text. Diacritics, the prepositions s and z, and commas before subordinate clauses are the other big sources of mistakes. The checker above uses LanguageTool’s Slovak rules.

5 common mistakes in Slovak

1. Czech forms in Slovak

Slovak and Czech share many words but not all forms: Slovak neviem, prečo and ďakujem, Czech nevím, proč and děkuji.

❌ Ja nevím.
✅ Ja neviem.

2. Missing diacritics

Letters such as ď, ľ, ť, č and the long vowels á, é, í, ó, ú, ý are separate letters. Leaving them out can produce a different word.

❌ Dakujem pekne.
✅ Ďakujem pekne.

3. Missing comma before že or ktorý

Slovak separates a subordinate clause with a comma, before words such as že, ktorý, keď and lebo.

❌ Viem že prídeš.
✅ Viem, že prídeš.

4. S or z

S/so means “with” (so sestrou, with my sister). Z/zo means “from” or “out of” (zo školy, from school).

❌ Išiel som zo sestrou.
✅ Išiel som so sestrou.

5. Past tense plural -ly

In Slovak, the past tense plural always ends in -li, whatever the gender. The -ly ending is Czech.

❌ Deti sa hraly vonku.
✅ Deti sa hrali vonku.

Try it with a sample sentence

Paste this sentence into the checker above to see what it flags, then compare it with the corrected version:

❌ Viem že pôjdem zo sestrou, dakujem.
✅ Viem, že pôjdem so sestrou, ďakujem.
