About writing in Galician
Galician is closely related to Portuguese and lives side by side with Spanish, so most writing errors are Spanish words and structures (castelanismos) slipping into Galician text. Pronoun placement and the contractions of prepositions with articles are the other common problems. The checker above uses LanguageTool’s Galician rules, which follow the official standard of the Real Academia Galega.
5 common mistakes in Galician
1. Spanish words in Galician
Common Spanish words have their own Galician forms: grazas (not gracias), xoves (not jueves), mañá (not mañana).
❌ Gracias pola axuda.
✅ Grazas pola axuda.
2. Pronoun before the verb
In ordinary statements, Galician places object pronouns after the verb and joins them to it: chámome, díxenllo.
❌ Me chamo Ana.
✅ Chámome Ana.
3. Missing contraction
Prepositions merge with articles: a + o = ao, de + a = da, en + o = no.
❌ Vou a o mercado.
✅ Vou ao mercado.
4. Spanish j instead of x
Galician uses x for the sound written j in Spanish: xoves, xente, xuño.
❌ Vémonos o jueves.
✅ Vémonos o xoves.
5. Mañana or mañá
“Tomorrow” in Galician is mañá.
❌ Chámote mañana.
✅ Chámote mañá.
