About writing in Scottish Gaelic
Scottish Gaelic uses grave accents (à, è, ì, ò, ù) to mark long vowels and changes the start of words through lenition. The modern spelling, settled in the 1980s, uses only grave accents, so older acute accents are now errors. This is a spelling-only checker: it finds misspelled words with an open-source Scottish Gaelic dictionary that runs in your browser, so your text is never uploaded.
3 common mistakes in Scottish Gaelic
1. Missing accent
Accents mark long vowels and are part of the spelling: fàilte, Gàidhlig, mòr.
❌ Failte!
✅ Fàilte!
2. Acute instead of grave accent
The current standard spelling uses only the grave accent: mòr, not mór.
❌ Tha an taigh mór.
✅ Tha an taigh mòr.
3. No lenition after mo
After mo (my) and do (your), the next word is lenited by adding h: mo charaid.
❌ Seo mo caraid.
✅ Seo mo charaid.
Try it with a sample sentence
Paste this sentence into the checker above to see which words it flags:
❌ Failte! Tha an taigh mór.
✅ Fàilte! Tha an taigh mòr.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Scottish Gaelic spell checker free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no limits.
Does it check Scottish Gaelic grammar?
No. It checks spelling only, using a dictionary of correctly spelled words.
Why does the first check take a few seconds?
The Scottish Gaelic dictionary is downloaded to your browser the first time you check. After that it stays loaded while you are on the page.
Is my text private?
Yes. The check runs on your own device. Your text is not sent to our servers.
Does it check lenition?
Only partly. A lenited and unlenited word can both be real words, so not every missing lenition is caught.

No. The dictionary is downloaded once and checking happens in your browser.
Can I check Irish?
Yes. Use the Irish grammar checker.
