About writing in Nynorsk
Nynorsk is one of Norway’s two written standards, used by about one in ten Norwegians and in many schools and local councils in western Norway. The most common errors are Bokmål words used by habit, because the two standards share most vocabulary but differ in many everyday words. This is a spelling-only checker: it finds misspelled words with an open-source Nynorsk dictionary that runs in your browser, so your text is never uploaded.
3 common mistakes in Nynorsk
1. Bokmål pronouns
Nynorsk uses eg (I), ikkje (not) and veit (know) where Bokmål has jeg, ikke and vet.
❌ Jeg vet ikke.
✅ Eg veit ikkje.
2. Bokmål question words
Question words start with k in Nynorsk: kva, kven, korleis, kvifor.
❌ Hva gjør du?
✅ Kva gjer du?
3. Bokmål plural endings
Many nouns take -ar and -ane in the plural: bilar, bilane.
❌ Bilene står ute.
✅ Bilane står ute.
