About writing in Luxembourgish
Luxembourgish has its own official spelling, with accents such as é and ë and the n-rule (Eifeler Regel), which drops a final n before most consonants. Because most speakers also write German and French, words from those languages often slip in. This is a spelling-only checker: it finds misspelled words with an open-source Luxembourgish dictionary that runs in your browser, so your text is never uploaded.
3 common mistakes in Luxembourgish
1. Missing accents
Accents are part of the spelling: wéi (how), Lëtzebuerg.
❌ Moien, wei geet et?
✅ Moien, wéi geet et?
2. German instead of Luxembourgish
Everyday words differ from German: ech (I), net (not), och (also).
❌ Ich wunnen zu Lëtzebuerg.
✅ Ech wunnen zu Lëtzebuerg.
3. The n-rule
A final n is dropped before most consonants, but kept before vowels and before d, h, n, t and z: de Mann, but den Hond.
❌ Ech gesinn den Mann.
✅ Ech gesinn de Mann.
Try it with a sample sentence
Paste this sentence into the checker above to see which words it flags:
❌ Moien, wei geet et? Ich wunnen zu Letzebuerg.
✅ Moien, wéi geet et? Ech wunnen zu Lëtzebuerg.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Luxembourgish spell checker free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no limits.
Does it check Luxembourgish grammar?
No. It checks spelling only, using a dictionary of correctly spelled words.
Why does the first check take a few seconds?
The Luxembourgish dictionary is downloaded to your browser the first time you check. After that it stays loaded while you are on the page.
Is my text private?
Yes. The check runs on your own device. Your text is not sent to our servers.
Does it check the n-rule?
Only partly. Both forms (de and den) are real words, so the spell checker cannot always tell which one the sentence needs.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The dictionary is downloaded once and checking happens in your browser.
Which spelling does it follow?
The official Luxembourgish spelling, as reformed in 2019.
