About writing in Romanian
Romanian has five special letters (ă, â, î, ș, ț), and the last two are often typed with the wrong mark, a cedilla instead of a comma below. Hyphens, definite articles and words that sound alike cause most other mistakes. The checker above uses LanguageTool’s Romanian rules for spelling, diacritics and common grammar errors.
5 common mistakes in Romanian
1. Missing diacritics
ă, â, î, ș and ț are separate letters. Without them, words can change meaning: fata (the girl) and fața (the face).
❌ Multumesc pentru ajutor.
✅ Mulțumesc pentru ajutor.
2. Ș and ț with a cedilla
The correct Romanian letters are ș and ț with a comma below. The forms with a cedilla (ş, ţ) came from old keyboard layouts and are not standard.
❌ Aceasta este o şcoală.
✅ Aceasta este o școală.
3. Sa or s-a
S-a is the reflexive pronoun plus the verb (s-a dus, he went). Să introduces the subjunctive (vreau să plec).
❌ Sa dus acasă.
✅ S-a dus acasă.
4. Copii or copiii
With the definite article, nouns ending in -ii take a third i: copii (children), copiii (the children).
❌ Copii au plecat la școală.
✅ Copiii au plecat la școală.
5. Odată or o dată
O dată means “one time” (once a week). Odată means “once upon a time” or “at some point”.
❌ Merg la sală odată pe săptămână.
✅ Merg la sală o dată pe săptămână.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Romanian grammar checker free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no download.
Is my Romanian text stored?
SpellMistake does not save it. To check it, your text is sent to the LanguageTool service, as explained in our Privacy Policy.
How do I type ș and ț correctly?
Add the Romanian (Standard) keyboard layout in your device settings. It types ș and ț with a comma below. If your text has ş or ţ with a cedilla, replace them with ș and ț.
Does it add missing diacritics?
Yes. For text typed without diacritics, it suggests the correct word where the plain form is not a valid word.
Can I check long documents?
Yes. Each check accepts up to 20,000 characters.
